Ageless Beauty: Natural Anti-Aging Treatments for Younger Skin

These Natural Skin Anti-Aging Treatments Turn Back Time!

Life passes by in the blink of an eye, doesn’t it? And the longer we journey through life, the more the quest for youthful, radiant skin becomes a common concern for many women. Estrogen is one of the key components of healthy skin. But unfortunately, estrogen production can start to decline as early as age 21, and then plummets dramatically during perimenopause. So anti-aging skin care takes on new urgency for women during the menopausal transition, when estrogen levels dramatically decrease.

Functional medicine doctor Ruthie Harper, MD in Austin, TX, helps patients maintain youthful skin at every age with a natural, holistic, “whole person” approach, combining hormone health, nutrition, sun protection, hydration, and targeted anti-aging treatments that incorporate the latest and most effective skin rejuvenation technologies.

In this article, renowned Austin, TX anti-aging specialist Dr. Ruthie Harper sets forth the “secrets” to defying aging for radiant skin at any age.

The Role of Estrogen in Skin Anti-Aging

Dr. Ruthie Harper, in Austin, TX is a hormone replacement expert who doesn’t just treat skin issue with superficial, temporary treatments. Instead, she understands the skin aging process. She notes that the first step in achieving timeless beauty is recognizing the pivotal role estrogen plays in skin health. This hormone is crucial for the production of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides – key components that keep the skin plump, hydrated, and firm.

Estrogen’s influence on skin health extends beyond surface-level effects. It supports blood vessel health, ensuring efficient delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the skin. However, as women transition into menopause, the loss of estrogen leads to significant changes in skin quality. Dr. Harper explains that in the first year after menopause, collagen levels can drop by as much as 30%, resulting in a dramatic decline in skin health and a rapid acceleration of visible aging signs.

For this reason, the first year after menopause brings a dramatic decline in skin health and a rapid acceleration in aging. To achieve timeless beauty and combat aging, it’s essential to understand and actively counteract these changes with targeted skincare, lifestyle choices, and hormone support.

Skin Changes Post-Menopause

As women age and transition into menopause, the ovaries stop producing estrogen, resulting in significant changes in the skin. These include:

  • Decreased Collagen Production: Collagen provides structure and firmness to the skin. Its decline contributes to sagging and wrinkles.
  • Loss of Hydration: The reduction in ceramides and hyaluronic acid leads to drier, less supple skin.
  • Weakened Skin Integrity: The skin becomes thinner and more prone to damage and slower to heal.
  • Fat Loss in the Face: Loss of fat pads in the face leads to hollowing and a more aged appearance.

Understanding these changes is crucial for developing effective skin anti-aging strategies, including the following

Sun Protection: A Key to Skin Anti-Aging

While sunlight is essential for vitamin D production and overall well-being, Dr. Harper cautions that overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can accelerate skin aging through a process known as “inflammaging.” This oxidative damage contributes significantly to wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and the breakdown of collagen.

Sun Exposure and Its Role in Skin Aging: While sunlight is necessary for vitamin D production and overall well-being, overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) light accelerates skin aging through oxidative stress, leading to a condition known as “inflammaging.” This oxidative damage contributes to wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and the breakdown of collagen.

Practical Sun Protection Tips:

  • Get Sun in Moderation: Expose your skin to sunlight for 15-20 minutes a day to benefit from vitamin D and serotonin production. Beyond that, cover up with a wide-brimmed hat or clothing and using sunscreen.
  • Avoid Sunburns: Burns cause extreme oxidative stress, accelerating aging. Prevent burns by limiting sun exposure during peak hours and using a mineral-based sunblock (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) on exposed skin.
  • Avoid Chemical Sunscreens: Many chemical sunscreens are toxic and may disrupt hormones. Opt for mineral-based sunblock instead.

Estrogen Replacement & Topical Estrogen for Skin Anti-Aging

Topical Estrogen Therapy: For women in menopause or approaching it, applying topical estrogen, particularly in the form of estriol (a weaker estrogen), can be highly effective in maintaining skin health. This can be compounded with progesterone, vitamin c and other skin enhancing nutrient to enhance the effects. The topical application of estriol helps:

Boost Collagen Production: Strengthening the skin’s structure and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
Hydrate and Nourish the Skin: Improving moisture levels by stimulating ceramide production.
Promote Healing and Rejuvenation: Encouraging the formation of new blood vessels and tissue growth, which helps repair and revitalize aging skin.

Retinoids and Retinol: Retinoids, including Retin-A, are well-known for their ability to accelerate skin turnover, improve collagen production, and reduce the appearance of fine lines. However, retinoids work best when combined with adequate estrogen levels. When using retinoids, start slowly to avoid irritation and ensure your skin has enough moisture and protection.

Aesthetic Treatments for Skin Anti-Aging

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Microneedling: PRP involves using your body’s own platelets, which are rich in growth factors, to promote skin healing and rejuvenation. Radio frequency microneedling creates tiny channels in the skin, allowing PRP to penetrate deeper and stimulate collagen production. When combined with radiofrequency (RF) treatments, the results of PRP can be even more profound, tightening the skin, reducing wrinkles, and enhancing texture and tone.

Botox: Botox temporarily relaxes the muscles responsible for expression lines, such as frown lines and crow’s feet. Regular use can both reduce the severity of wrinkles and prevent these wrinkles from deepening over time.

Dermal Fillers: Hyaluronic acid-based fillers, such as Juvéderm (hyaluronic acid) and Radiesse (calcium hydroxyapatite), can restore lost volume, smooth out wrinkles, and plump areas like the lips and cheeks. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body, making it safe and effective for replenishing youthful fullness.

Lifestyle Choices for Skin Anti-Aging

Beautiful skin begins from within. A nutrient-rich diet can greatly impact your skin’s health.

Eat Antioxidant Rich Foods: Emphasize fruits, vegetables, to provide antioxidants that fight oxidative stress.

Hydrate Consistently: Drink plenty of water or herbal teas to maintain skin hydration. Infusing water with lemon or fruit can make hydration more enjoyable.

Gut-Skin Connection: The health of your gut influences your skin. A diet rich in fiber and fermented foods supports a healthy gut microbiome, which in turn promotes radiant, clear skin.

Sufficient exercise and proper sleep are also essential to the bodies ability to build and repair tissue, including the skin.

Exercise: Regular exercise improves circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the skin. It also promotes detoxification through sweat.
Sleep: Adequate sleep allows the skin time to repair and regenerate. Poor sleep can lead to dark circles, dull skin, and accelerated aging.

Advanced Technologies for Skin Anti-Aging

Laser Treatments for Skin Anti-Aging

Lasers can target various skin issues, including pigmentation, redness, and texture irregularities. They work by stimulating collagen production and promoting cell turnover. While effective, some lasers can be expensive and aggressive requiring significant discomfort and downtime.

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) photofacials available at Ruthie Harper, MD in Austin, TX are a highly effective, natural, comfortable and safe form of skincare treatment. This painless skin anti-aging treatment uses light wavelengths to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and remove irregular pigmentation and photo-damaged skin. IPL photofacials provide a wide variety of benefits for those experiencing signs of aging, with the added benefit of no downtime.

IPL Photofacials use precise amounts of intense pulsed light (IPL) that are then absorbed by the damaged skin. This results in a stimulation that produces collagen to help improve the appearance of aging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. This also helps improve the appearance of dark pigmentation and age spots, while reducing the size of pores.

Cellular Renewal for Skin Anti-Aging

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy combined with microneedling is a safe, effective, and natural treatment skin anti-aging treatment available at Ruthie Harper, MD in Austin, TX. This “PRP Facial” stimulates the body’s own healing and repair processes. This provides volume while correcting wrinkles, lines, scars, unwanted pigmentation, stretch marks, and other imperfections almost anywhere on the face or body.

The PRP is obtained from the patient’s own blood and then injected into the treatment area using the advanced SkinPen microneedling system. The natural growth and repair factors in the PRP activate the skin’s rejuvenation and repair mechanisms – plumping and resurfacing skin. And because the the PRP is obtained from the patient’s own blood, it eliminates the risks for allergic or immune reaction or other side effects.

Advantages of a Thread Lift Over a Face Lift

As people age, the skin on their face begins to lose its elasticity and can result in sagging, wrinkles, and a tired appearance. Many people turn to cosmetic procedures to combat these signs of aging, with facelifts being one of the most popular options.

However, facelifts are invasive procedures that are very expensive, require anesthesia, and can lead to significant pain and prolonged downtime. But in recent years, a new non-invasive option called the thread lift has emerged.

Dr. Ruthie Harper, MD in Austin, TX offers the revolutionary new MINT™ thread lift. This minimally-invasive anti-aging treatment offers many of the same benefits of a surgical facelift – without the expense, pain, complications, and long recovery period of surgery.

In this article, Dr. Ruthie Harper, MD will discuss the benefits of a thread lift over a surgical facelift.

What is a Thread Lift?

A thread lift is a non-surgical procedure that uses a dissolvable suture material made of sugar to lift and tighten sagging skin. During the procedure, threads are inserted under the skin, which are then pulled to lift and tighten the skin. The threads are then anchored in place, and the excess thread is trimmed away. The entire procedure can be completed in under an hour, and there is minimal downtime.

Benefits of a Thread Lift Over a Facelift

1. Thread Lifts are Non-Invasive: A thread lift is a non-invasive procedure, while a facelift is an invasive surgical procedure that requires general anesthesia. The risks associated with general anesthesia are higher than those associated with a thread lift.

2. Thread Lifts are Non-Surgical Procedure: A thread lift is a non-surgical procedure, which means there is no anesthesia required, and the risk of complications is significantly reduced. The procedure is minimally invasive, and there is minimal pain or discomfort during the procedure.

3. No Downtime with Thread Lifts: A thread lift requires minimal downtime, and most people can return to their regular activities immediately after the procedure. There may be some swelling or bruising in the days following the procedure, but this usually subsides within a few days.

4. Thread Lifts Offer Natural Looking Results: A thread lift provides natural-looking results that can last up to two years. The threads used in the procedure are made of biodegradable sugar material that is naturally absorbed by the body over time. As the threads dissolve, collagen is left behind and the skin is left looking firmer and tighter.

5. Thread Lifts are Less Expensive: A thread lift is a less expensive option than a traditional facelift. The cost of a thread lift can vary depending on the number of threads required, but it is generally less expensive than a facelift.

6. Thread Lifts are Customizable: A thread lift is a customizable procedure that can be tailored to meet the needs of each patient. The number of threads used can be adjusted to provide the desired level of lift and tightening, and the procedure can be performed on specific areas of the face or the entire face.

7. Thread Lifts are Very Low Risk: A thread lift is a low-risk procedure, and the risk of complications is minimal. Some people may experience minor bruising or swelling after the procedure, but these typically subside within a few days.

The Inflammation and Dementia Link

By Ruthie Harper, MD | Austin, TX

Inflammation has been linked to a number of physical and cognitive health issues, but new research is showing that it could play a bigger role in dementia than previously thought.

A team of researchers from the University of Cambridge recently conducted a study analyzing postmortem brain tissue from more than 200 people who had suffered from various forms of dementia. The findings, published in the journal Brain, indicate that inflammation could be a significant underlying cause of some forms of dementia. This breakthrough has implications for how we think about and treat dementia.

Measuring Inflammation in the Body

Fortunately, blood tests are an easy and reliable way to measure levels of inflammation in the body. By measuring proteins and other markers related to inflammation, physicians can assess if a person has an underlying condition that could be causing inflammation. This can be especially useful in cases where inflammation is thought to be contributing to dementia.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an important biomarker used to accurately measure inflammation in people with dementia. CRP is produced by the liver and its levels increase when inflammation is present. This protein can be tested through a simple blood test, which allows healthcare professionals to accurately assess the level of inflammation present in individuals with signs of dementia.

Reducing Inflammation in the Body

The good news is that there are ways to reduce inflammation in the body including foods, supplements and lifestyle changes that reduce inflammation and protect against dementia. Studies have shown that inflammation in patients with dementia was reduced by 10% through increased physical activity and use of foods and supplements packed with antioxidants and other anti-inflammatory compounds.

Whole grains, nuts and seeds contain high levels of vitamins and minerals that combat inflammation. Brightly colored fruits and vegetables like blueberries, strawberries, oranges, spinach, kale, broccoli, and other cruciferous vegetables are rich in vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants which also protect the brain by reducing inflammation in the body.

Nutritional supplements that reduce inflammation can also be a valuable tool in the fight against dementia. Omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in small fresh water fish, are a popular choice for reducing inflammation and providing beneficial effects on cognitive health. Vitamins essential for managing inflammation and reducing the risk of dementia include vitamin C, D, E, B6 and B12.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps to reduce oxidative stress in the body, while Vitamin D is important for regulating the immune system and preventing inflammation. Vitamin E helps to protect cell membranes and B vitamins are essential for nerve condition in the brain. Studies have also shown that flavonoids, anthocyanins, and anti-inflammatory supplements like curcumin and turmeric can have a positive impact on reducing inflammation throughout the body which protects the brain.

Physical activity is also an essential part of reducing inflammation and managing dementia. Regular exercise helps to improve blood circulation, reduce stress hormones, and boost the immune system which can all help to reduce inflammation in the body. Research has found that aerobic exercise, walking or jogging, dancing, swimming, strength training, and stretching can all be beneficial for reducing inflammation.

By using supplements packed with antioxidants and increasing physical activity to manage CRP levels, researchers have seen an average 10% decrease in inflammatory achieved over a 4-week period.

Diet and Inflammation

When considering ways to prevent or limit the progression of dementia, eating a diet full of nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, avoiding smoking, and reducing stress are all important lifestyle factors that can reduce inflammation in our bodies, and this can have positive effects on brain health.

By making wise choices that reduce inflammation, we can start to make progress in both preventing and fighting dementia and improving the quality of life for those affected by it. We can then make a real difference in tackling dementia and improving the quality of life for many people around the world.

Researching Inflammation and Dementia

Since inflammation has a major impact on cognitive decline, it is crucial that further research and development continue in this area. With continued collaborative efforts from researchers and clinicians we can make real progress in the fight against dementia and improve the lives of those suffering from it. It is likely that we are just scratching the surface of this area, and there remain many questions to answer and solutions to develop.

The next step is to continue conducting research on inflammation and dementia so that we can develop better treatments and therapies that are more targeted towards preventing and reducing inflammation. We must remain committed to finding new ways to address this growing health problem. Only through continued research and dedication can we make a difference in the fight against dementia. This breakthrough gives us hope for a brighter future.

A better understanding of how inflammation affects dementia could lead to life-changing treatments and therapies for those affected. With continued dedication, we can make a real difference in tackling dementia and improving the quality of life for people worldwide.

Look Younger Naturally With Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Doctor Ruthie Harper realizes that patients want to look as good on the outside as they feel on the inside! That is why she offers natural, anti-aging IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments at her Integrative Medicine practice in Austin, TX.

IPL – sometimes called a “Photofacial” – is a safe, effective, and affordable treatment for reversing the effects of UV skin damage. In addition to fading dark spots and pigmentation caused by sun exposure, IPL can also improve skin texture, reduce redness and rosacea, help treat acne, and much more.

In this article we explain how Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments at Ruthie Harper, MD in Austin, TX can help you love the skin you’re in – without surgery and with no downtime.

How Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Works

IPL delivers high-intensity pulses of specific light frequencies that are calibrated to be absorbed by pigmented or damaged cells. The heat energy of the laser is absorbed by the pigmented area, where it destroys the discolored cells – leaving the healthy skin cells intact.

IPL can also be used to target the red hemoglobin in spider veins and other visible blood vessels that are causing redness. The thermal energy of the IPL laser collapses the unsightly blood vessels, dramatically reducing redness.

And, the IPL thermal energy also helps repair damaged skin by stimulating the production of new skin cells, as well as collagen and elastin which are the building blocks of young looking, smooth, clear, healthy skin.

The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment

An Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) session generally only takes about 30 minutes or less in our Austin medical office. There is typically minimal to no discomfort – but a numbing agent may be applied upon request to ensure a pleasant and pain free experience.

After an IPL treatment there is usually only mild redness – somewhat like a sunburn. There may also be slight swelling, but skin should return to normal in a matter of a few hours. Applying cold packs to the treatment areas can assist in making the redness and irritation subside even faster. (Note: never apply ice directly to the skin).

Other than the mild redness, there is not any downtime. So, patients can resume their normal, everyday activities immediately afterwards.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Results

Patients typically see dramatic improvement in their skin after just one treatment. Depending on the type and extent of skin damage, a series of two or three IPL treatments may be recommended for optimal results. Dr. Harper will conduct a a thorough skin analysis, to determine the number of treatments recommended for you for spectacular IPL facial results.

While there will be some immediate improvement in “glow” and clarity immediately after treatment, it takes about a week to see the initial results IPL. Results continue to improve for four to six weeks until patients can to see the final results – as the body continues to produce new collagen, elastin and skin cells.

Am I a Good Candidate for IPL?

Because IPL treats a wide array of skin issues, it is suitable for a wide array of patients. Both women and men can benefit from Intense Pulsed Light therapy. And because it is a safe and gentle treatment it can be used on patients of virtually any age – from teens with acne issues to seniors looking for antiaging benefits.

However, because the Intense Pulsed Light is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in skin, it should never be used on darker skin tones. IPL can cause and increase in skin discoloration – called post-inflammatory pigmentation – when used on darker skin colors. For patients with darker skin, we offer PRP facial rejuvenation at our office in Austin, TX.

We recommend Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Facials at Ruthie Harper, MD in Austin, TX for patients who have one or more of the following skin conditions:

  • Redness, broken capillaries, spider veins, rosacea
  • Age spots, sun spots, and brown spots

PRP Treatments for Natural Healing & AntiAging

PRP is a revolutionary, 100% natural medical treatment that helps the body heal itself – and can reverse many of the effects of aging. PRP stands for “platelet rich plasma”, which can repair joints, restore sexual performance and enjoyment, regrow hair, and improve skin texture and tone for a younger appearance.

Even better, “PRP” works without surgery, without side effects, and without downtime! In this article, Austin, TX integrative medicine specialist Dr. Ruthie Harper explains how this innovative “fountain of youth” treatment works.

What is PRP Treatment?

During PRP treatments, a small vial of the patient’s blood is extracted from their arm, similar to the process of undergoing a routine blood test.  The liquid part of the blood – the plasma – is then separated from the solid red and white blood cells with a centrifuge.

The extracted “platelet rich plasma” (PRP) contains highly concentrated levels of platelets which are the components of the blood that contain the body’s own natural “growth factors”.  The plasma is then injected into the area being treated using a fine syringe.

The History of PRP Treatments

PRP was first used in the early 1980s in maxillofacial surgery patients for its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to stimulate cell regrowth.

However, PRP then became more well-known for its use in treating musculoskeletal and joint injuries in sports medicine. Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant and Alex Rodriguez are just a few of the athletes who have undergone PRP therapy for sports injuries.

Other medical applications of PRP include cardiac surgery, pediatric medicine, urology, plastic surgery, and ophthalmology.

PRP Facials for AntiAging

PRP’s amazing cellular regeneration properties also make it highly effective for rejuvenating skin. PRP “facials” are known for making wrinkles disappear, and improving skin’s evenness, tightness, glow, and youthful appearance. Even better, the incredible PRP facial is a skin rejuvenation treatment that is 100% natural, non-surgical, and comes with no downtime – while taking years off of a person’s appearance.

In fact, the so-called “Vampire Facial®” which was made famous on social media by celebrities and influencers like Kim Kardashian is actually just a trademarked name for a PRP Facial.

Healthy, young skin looks smooth and plump because younger bodies produce high levels of collagen and elastin – which are the building blocks of tight youthful skin.  However, as the skin ages, production of collagen and elastin decreases substantially. This causes facial skin to sag, and wrinkles and fine lines develop.

But the healing properties of PRP stimulate the body to renew production of new collagen and elastin.  This results in thicker, plumper, and tighter skin – reducing lines and wrinkles, and improving overall facial tone and texture. PRP treatments can take ten years or more off of a patient’s appearance!

PRP Treatments for Hair Loss

The same 100% natural PRP cellular regeneration technology used in joint repair and antiaging is also offered by Ruthie Harper, MD in Austin, TX to regrow hair.

During PRP hair loss treatment, after the routine blood draw, the plasma containing high concentrations of natural growth and healing factors is separated from the patient’s blood. The liquid “Platelet Rich Plasma” is then injected into the scalp where it regenerates the hair follicles on a cellular level.

The growth factors in the PRP “wake up” dormant hair follicles to start producing thicker, stronger, healthier hair shafts. Additionally, PRP has been shown to stimulate stem cells to regenerate hair growth.

Additional growth factors may be added to this process, to increase the effectiveness of this treatment. For example, “A-Cell” – a cellular regenerator that activates and recruits stem cells for hair regrowth – can be used with or without PRP.

In addition to PRP treatments for hair loss, Dr. Harper also offers many other hair restoration therapies and treatments.

PRP Treatments for Sexual Health

In women, PRP treatments can also improve sexual sensitivity, tighten the vagina, make intercourse less painful, decrease bladder leaks – and even increase libido!

Feminine PRP injections for sexual health are sometimes called the “O Shot” or “Orgasm Shot”.  PRP has been proven in clinical studies to increase natural vaginal lubrication, and to help women achieve better, more frequent orgasms.

In men, PRP injections into the penis – sometimes called the “P Shot” or “Priapus Shot” – can help men achieve or maintaining firm erections.

The PRP Treatment Process

After a routine blood draw, patients relax while the blood is spun in a centrifuge and the liquid PRP is separated.

To eliminate any potential discomfort, topical anesthetic can be applied to numb the treatment area. So, PRP treatments are a relatively pain-free procedure when used for cellular rejuvenation of the face or hair. Dr. Harper then injects the PRP into the treatment area with a very fine syringe.

For skin rejuvenation patients, more than one PRP Facial may be suggested depending upon the extent of the wrinkles, and the degree of sun damage. Since hair grows in staggered “phases,” PRP Hair restoration patients will need multiple treatments to treat every follicle during the growth stage.

Over the next several weeks, the growth factors in the PRP will continue to stimulate production of new cells.

No Downtime After PRP Treatment

There is almost no recovery time after PRP treatments and patients can return to work or their daily activities immediately following the procedure. Some slight redness or mild swelling of the skin may occur, but this will diminish in 2 to 3 days or less.

Reduce Wrinkles by Naturally Building Collagen

Collagen is a protein produced by the body that serves as a primary building block of bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments – as well as hair, nails, and skin. Healthy collagen levels are essential for maintaining youthful skin texture, tone, and elasticity. Collagen fibers form a “scaffolding” of sorts under the skin that gives the complexion a plump, youthful look, and keeps it from sagging and wrinkling.

Unfortunately, the body’s production of the youth-giving protein collagen decreases dramatically with age – which is what leads to sagging and wrinkled skin. In this article, anti-aging expert Dr. Ruthie Harper explains what works (and what doesn’t) to help restore the skin’s collagen for beautiful, youthful skin at any age.

When Does Collagen Loss Start?

Surprisingly, collagen decline starts as early as one’s 20s, at which point the skin actually starts breaking down more collagen than it produces. This is when women typically first notice their skin going from “baby soft” to more coarsely textured. And, as the skin’s plumpness subtly declines, women in their late 20s start to look less like a “young woman” and more mature.

However, the biggest collagen loss occurs with the dramatic hormone decline of menopause. In fact, most women lose up to 30% of their collagen production in the first 5 years of menopause. This is often when most women notice the biggest jump in the visible signs of aging to their skin.

Do Collagen Supplements Work?

Collagen is a big “buzzword” in advertising today, with companies touting everything from collagen pills to potions that supposedly miraculously restore youthful skin. Collagen supplements, in the form of collagen powders, capsules, and liquids are now touted heavily on TV and across social media. Most of these “miracle” collagen supplements come from the ground up bones, skin, and connective tissue of animals, including cattle, horses, pigs, or rabbits.

So does just ingesting straight collagen from animal sources really work to improve skin?

The simple answer is “probably not”. There is no scientific evidence that consuming animal collagen itself – in the form of collagen supplements – benefits the skin, hair or other parts of the body. (Note: There are a few studies out there that seem to show some nominal benefits to eating collagen – but if you look closely you will see that this research was released by the manufacturers themselves.)

The reason just eating collagen doesn’t benefit skin is because most things we ingest are broken down by stomach acids – and are not absorbed into the bloodstream. So, it’s doubtful (and even somewhat controversial) that orally ingested collagen will survive being totally broken down in the stomach enough to make its way to the skin.

However, this doesn’t mean that there isn’t another “right” way to help the body build collagen with supplements!

Building Collagen the Right Way with Supplements

To turn back the hands of time, Austin anti-aging expert Dr. Ruthie Harper has formulated a proprietary supplement called SkinShift Collagen Defense specifically to address the issue of collagen loss.

However, rather than containing straight collagen derived from animal parts, SkinShift Collagen Defense contains the essential nutrients that enable the body to naturally build more of its own collagen. This scientifically designed supplement contains plant-derived choline and silicon (note: silicon should not be confused with the plastic silicone) which stimulates the body’s natural production of human collagen, keratin and elastin.

With continued use of SkinShift Collagen Defense the result is a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, thickening and strengthening of skin, hair and nails, and even improved bone density.

Choline Supplements to Build Collagen

Choline is a member of the B vitamin family that aids in the production of cellular membranes – which helps in the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. Choline is crucial for collagen synthesis because it gets converted into glycine – one of the amino acids needed for collagen production.

A boost of Choline will also preserve skin elasticity by preventing free radical damage to skin cells because of its amazing antioxidant properties.

SkinShift Collagen Defense contains choline in the form of “Choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid” (a mixture of orthosilicic acid and choline chloride). This is believed to be a more bioavailable form of silicon, meaning that it is more effectively absorbed by the body.

Silicon Supplements to Build Collagen

SkinShift Collagen Defense also contains silicon which has been shown in scientific research to have an important function in the formation and maintenance of connective tissue, by supporting production of the protein collagen.

Exposure of the skin to the sun’s UV rays causes damage to the underlying connective tissue of the skin – resulting in a loss of elasticity and firmness. But silicon ((in the form of Choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid) has been shown to be both bioavailable (well absorbed) and effective at increasing the strength and elasticity of the dermis (lower layer of skin tissue).

In a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study, fifty women with photodamaged facial skin were given this form of silicon orally for 20 weeks. The researchers found that during the 20-week study there was a significant positive effect on the skin tone, texture, and elasticity (as well as reduced brittleness of hair and nails) in the women who took silica.

Collagen Defense Supplements

If you would like to reduce lines and wrinkles and improve your skin’s tone and elasticity, don’t fall for “snake-oil salesmen” on TV or online who say that consuming collagen from animal bone is the answer.

Instead, nourish you body with the essential nutrients needed to build collagen “from the inside out”. Shop for SkinShift Collagen Defense HERE and take the first step toward turning back time with plumper, smoother, tighter, and more youthful skin!

How to Get Younger Skin – From the Inside Out

As a woman ages, her body changes in many ways. But the most visible – and probably the most frustrating – sign of aging is wrinkled and lined skin. Many women assume that wrinkles and lines are an unavoidable part of getting older. But, with proper care from the outside and the inside of the body, the skin can retain much of its youthful smoothness and elasticity well past menopause.

In this article Austin’s own women’s health and anti-aging expert Dr. Ruthie Harper, MD explains how women can maintain healthy, glowing skin at every age with proper care from the inside out.

Younger Skin from the Inside: Treating Hormone Decline

Women now live an amazing two times longer than they did 100 years ago!  But, while the female life-expectancy has doubled, the age at which menopause and its associated hormone decline occurs has remained the same.

And, unfortunately, the hormone decline of menopause can lead to many unpleasant side effects in addition to some serious diseases. Most women know that menopausal hormone deficiency commonly leads to loss of libido, vaginal pain, mood swings, weight gain, osteoporosis and more.

But many women are not aware that the hormone decline of menopause is also the primary contributor to aging of the skin, including sagging, fine lines and wrinkles, decreased ‘plumpness’ and loss of elasticity. Fortunately, bioidentical hormone replacement can restore missing hormones and help “turn back time” to rejuvenate skin that is starting to show its age.

Hormones That Build Younger Skin

Estrogen is the most well-known female hormone, affecting sex drive, fertility, reproduction and much more. But what many women don’t know is that estrogen levels also affect the skin’s cellular structure, including thickness, plumpness, elasticity, and hydration.

Collagen and elastin are the proteins that form the ‘scaffolding’ that gives skin its structure, tone, and firmness. But when estrogen levels decline, production of collagen and elastin also decreases. Additionally, estrogen increases the production of Hyaluronic Acid, which is responsible for maintaining the skin’s moisture and “plumpness”.

So, according to many clinical studies, including one published in Dermatology Online Journal (2019), this combination of collagen loss and moisture decline is what is responsible for the deeper, more prominent wrinkles that occur with age.

Similarly, testosterone – typically considered a ‘male’ hormone – also plays an important role in the appearance of a woman’s skin. Sufficient testosterone levels are associated with both thicker and more hydrated skin – which in turn is responsible for later onset of signs of skin aging.

The thyroid gland also produces two hormones that influence almost every function of the body – from metabolism and weight gain, to muscle strength and bone density. And insufficient levels of these thyroid hormones can also cause a woman’s skin to become dry and coarse – leading to wrinkles, lines and other signs of aging.

Hormone Therapy for Younger Skin

Recent clinical studies have shown that replacing a woman’s deficient hormones improves skin elasticity, hydration, thickness, plumpness, texture, tone and smoothness. This medical research has also revealed that females who have been prescribed bioidentical hormone replacement therapy have younger-looking skin with fewer wrinkles and lines, greater elasticity and less sagging.

Dr. Ruthie can conduct comprehensive blood testing to determine if a woman has insufficient, excessive, or imbalanced levels of specific hormones, including estrogen, progestin, testosterone, and thyroid hormones. She can then prescribe customized bioidentical hormone replacement therapy to rebalance the patient’s hormones – for more youthful skin, as well as thicker hair, greater energy, and improved overall health.

Younger Skin from the Inside: Proper Nutrition

A balanced diet is required for overall health, and each organ and body part – including the skin – has specific nutritional requirements. To turn back the hands of time, Dr. Harper has formulated a proprietary line of customized supplements that provide the wide variety of nutrients necessary to maintain healthy, youthful skin.

SKINSHIFT® Collagen Defense was developed to specifically address the issue of collagen loss. This scientifically designed formula contains an activated form of silica, called choline-stablized orthosilicic acid, which stimulates production of collagen, keratin, and elastin.

Free radical damage is another leading causes of aging skin. Dr. Harper developed SKINSHIFT® Antioxidant Defense Supplement to deliver a combination of full-spectrum antioxidants, flavonoids and polyphenols that offer protection against the oxidative stress, help reduce the signs of aging, and promote cellular repair for an even, smooth, glowing complexion.

Younger Skin from the Outside: Proper Skin Care

Dr. Ruthie Harper, MD has also developed revolutionary SKINSHIFT® skincare creams and serums that are scientifically based on DNA. These award-winning products have been featured on international television shows like Good Morning America and The Doctors. Today, thousands of patients have experienced the transformative, anti-aging benefits of Dr. Harper’s SKINSHIFT® skin care products.

Dr. Harper has formulated powerful SKINSHIFT VITAMIN C SERUM with the most advanced form of Vitamin C that is clinically proven to reduce wrinkles, stimulate collagen, and brighten and firm skin. Added Idebenone protects against free radical and UV damage while boosting the serum’s tightening, brightening, and rejuvenating effects. And proprietary botanicals provide a soothing treatment that protects the skin.

Another of Dr. Harper’s scientific skin care formulas, SKINSHIFT® Hyaluronic Moisture Serum with PCA, helps to provide superior hydration by attracting moisture to the skin. It includes highly effective antioxidants that protect the skin against damage from the sun and environmental toxins, while mineral complexes and aloe vera reduce free radicals, and support skin repair. This super serum visibly softens fine lines and wrinkles for a smoother, softer, younger-looking complexion.

Do MINT PDO Thread Lifts Really Work?

Do MINT PDO Thread Lifts Really Work?

A PDO thread lift is a minimally-invasive procedure – and an alternative to facelift surgery – that does not require general anesthesia, involves no large incisions, and has no significant downtime or post-procedure pain.

But, with all of these advantages over invasive facelift surgery, our patients often ask us: “Do PDO Thread Lifts Really Work?”

MINT PDO Threads Lifts vs. Face Lift Surgery

MINT™ PDO thread lifts have become an extremely popular alternative to facelift surgery for many reasons.

Even though face lift techniques have improved in recent years, face lift surgery still requires that the patient be hospitalized and “knocked out” with anesthesia. Then, during the face lift operation, large incisions are made, loose skin is literally cut off with a surgical knife, and then the tissue around the facial muscles is tightened and sewn back together – typically leaving lengthy scars behind the ears or around the hair line.

Drain tubes are typically placed in the face at the time of face lift surgery to remove any blood or fluid accumulation. Bed rest is required for a few days to a week after facelift surgery, and pain, visible swelling, and bruising can last for two to three weeks – or longer.

Conversely, MINT PDO Thread Lift patients experience virtually no downtime, and are able to resume work and other daily activities the next day. And there are no large incisions to heal and hide.

MINT PDO Thread Lift Results

During a non-surgical PDO thread lift, invisible sutures or “threads” are inserted beneath areas of sagging skin to pull it back into its original, youthful position. So, instead of cutting off loose skin like painful facelift surgery, a thread lift simply puts skin back in its original place and holds it there.

In other words, a thread lift simply restores youthful, natural looking tone and tightness – without the typical “sliced and stretched” appearance of a face lift.

Additionally, the inserted threads also activate the body’s production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. This results in natural development of thicker, younger, smoother, tighter and more elastic facial skin over time – with results that last for years, even after the PDO threads have dissolved.

So, while a facelift just stretches “old” skin, a thread lift rebuilds younger, plumper, healthier skin from the inside out.

The Areas a PDO Thread Lift Can Improve

#1. Thread Lift for the Jawline

A MINT PDO Thread Lift can reduce or eliminate jowls and define and sharpen the chin and jawline. A thread lift can also create more attractive “heart-shaped” facial contours.

#2. Thread Lift for the Cheeks

As we age, the cheeks loose subcutaneous fat, and often start to sag and become flat in appearance. But a MINT PDO Thread Lift positions and holds the cheeks back into their original position – creating visibly higher and more prominent cheekbones.

#3. Thread Lift for the Eyes

With age, the skin around the eyes loses elasticity and begins to sag and droop – adding years to one’s appearance. A Thread Lift restores the skin to its original, higher position.

And, thread lift “cat-eyes” are extremely popular with women of all ages.  Influencers and celebrities – like super model Bella Hadid and the Kardashian-Jenner women – are known for their ‘feline’ features, with upturned eyes and arched brows.

By inserting a thread at the outer tail of the eyebrow and lifting the brow upwards, it can be anchored at the desired height to achieve the on-trend cat-eye look!

#4. Thread Lift for the Skin

A thread lift softens fine lines and reduces or eliminate wrinkles two ways. First the microscopic “barbs” on the thread securely anchor onto the lax skin, lifting and holding it in place to reduce sagging, wrinkles and lines. But that’s not all!

And, while the PDO threads dissolve and eventually get absorbed by the body, they also stimulate the body’s renewed natural production of collagen – the building block or “scaffolding” of firm, toned, plump healthy skin. This leads to improvement in skin texture, tone, tightness and elasticity for long lasting results.

MINT™ PDO Thread Lift – Austin, TX

Because a PDO thread lift simply restores skin to its original position, the appearance is much more natural-looking than the stretching and cutting of face lift plastic surgery. Additionally, because the PDO threads facilitate renewed production of natural collagen fibers, the skin itself is improved, so results are long lasting.

And, while a MINT™ PDO Thread Lift offers many of the same benefits of a surgical facelift – it does not involve the expense, pain, potential complications, and long recovery period of surgery.

If you would like to look like a younger, healthier, more attractive version of yourself, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ruthie Harper, MD in Austin, TX to see how a minimally-invasive MINT™ PDO thread lift can turn-back the-clock and help you look as young on the outside as you feel on the inside!
