Get Rid of That Double Chin with Kybella!
Frustrated by that double chin? You’re not alone! In a survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery approximately 70% of participants reported being bothered by the appearance of fat under their chin. In another study of 1,996 survey respondents, 49% said that the area under their chins negatively impacted their appearance, and 35% of the people surveyed revealed that they shied away from photos and video chats because of their double chin.
Up until recently, getting rid of a double chin was almost impossible – since it is an area that simply doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. In many cases painful and expensive face or neck lift surgery and/or liposuction was the only remedy for a double chin – accompanied by scars and a long recovery period.
But revolutionary new Kybella injections are a nonsurgical treatment that can reduce or eliminate a “double chin” – affordably and with no downtime!
In this article Austin, TX anti aging expert Dr. Ruthie Harper explains how Kybella works and answers patients’ most frequently asked questions about this innovative new double chin treatment.
Causes of a Double Chin
Fat beneath the chin is called “submental” fat – and the three primary causes are genetics, aging, and of course, weight gain.
Putting on weight is the most obvious culprit in developing a double chin. But DNA plays a role as well. Heredity largely determines where our body will store fat cells – so if one or both of your parents had a double chin, there’s a good chance you will too. And when a double chin is genetic, even people at or near a healthy weight can still be troubled by excess fat under the face!
Additionally, as we age, the skin on the face becomes thinner, looser, and less elastic. As a result, fat in the lower face, neck and chin often sags and becomes more visible – creating jowls and a more pronounced double chin.
Studies have shown that both men and women with a double chin are perceived to be older and heavier than they actually are, by other people.
How Kybella Gets Rid of a Double Chin
Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a substance naturally produced by the human body. Deoxycholic acid breaks down dietary fat, causing it to be absorbed and eliminated from the body.
When deoxycholic acid is injected into the chin, it literally dissolves the submental fat under the jaw. The destroyed fat cells are then absorbed and eliminated by the body over time – creating a significantly stronger and more defined jawline.
Kybella is currently the only FDA approved injectable drug for the reduction of submental (under chin) fat.
How Long Will Kybella Results Last?
Kybella Double Chin Treatments have been available in the United States since 2016. And long-term studies on patients have determined that the results of Kybella Double Chin Treatment appear to be permanent.
This is because the human body does not have the ability to produce new fat cells. So, when submental fat cells are destroyed and removed during the Kybella Double Chin Treatment, it is virtually impossible for them to return.
In fact, clinical studies of patients injected with Kybella who gained weight following their treatment did not show any submental (under chin) fullness returning. This further supports the evidence that Kybella Double Chin Treatment is not only long-lasting, but truly permanent.
Is Kybella Double Chin Treatment Safe?
Because Kybella is a form of an acid that is naturally produced by the body it is generally very safe. And since it is non-surgical and requires no anesthetic, there are not the risks of infection, scarring etc. that come with liposuction or surgery.
Kybella was developed over the course of nine years, during which time it was subjected to more than 20 clinical studies, and tested on more than 2,600 patients before being brought to the market. In these clinical tests, more than 80% of Kybella patients expressed complete satisfaction with the double chin reduction results. So, the FDA Medical Advisory Committee gave the Kybella Double Chin Treatment a unanimous recommendation of approval.
In 2015, the Kybella Double Chin Treatment was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. And it remains the only FDA approved injectable treatment for the reduction of submental (double chin) fat.
How Many Kybella Double Chin Treatments Are Needed?
The number of Kybella treatments required varies from patient to patient, depending on the amount of submental fat that needs to be removed. But the typical number of Kybella treatments is between two and five. The procedures should be scheduled no less than a month apart, and only take a few minutes in our Austin, TX medical office.
The most typical patients usually only need to undergo two treatments spaced a month or two apart. But each patient’s specific number and timeframe of Kybella treatments will depend on their unique physiology as well as their fat loss and appearance goals.
Side Effects of Kybella Double Chin Treatment
Generally, the only side effects reported by most Kybella patients is minor tenderness and mild swelling in the treatment area – which subsides fairly quickly.
When administered by a skilled physician like Dr. Ruthie Harper in Austin, TX other side effects reported after Kybella injections are exceedingly rare and are similar to side effects associated with any injection such as a flu shot, dermal filler, or any other cosmetic injections.
In the hands of an unskilled injector, injection in the wrong place – such as outside the fat deposit or too close to the mouth – can cause skin or nerve damage. But Dr. Harper has never had a complication from Kybella double chin injections in any of her patients. So, you can confidently consider Kybella a safe and effective treatment for eliminating double chin fat.
Am I a Good Candidate for Kybella Double Chin Treatments?
Almost any adult man or woman in good health who has extra submental fat under the chin is a good candidate for Kybella injections. It is ideal for busy people, and an excellent alternative to surgery, because there is no downtime. It is also safe for all skin tones and colors.
Really, the only patients who should avoid Kybella are individuals with bleeding problems, those who have difficulty swallowing, or anyone who has other medical issues that affect the neck and face. Additionally, while Kybella is highly safe and effective for most people, patients who have undergone other cosmetic procedures on the jawline, neck, or chin (such as a facelift) should be carefully evaluated by Dr. Harper prior to being approved for Kybella Double Chin Treatment.
When You Will See Kybella Double Chin Treatment Results
Typically, patients who receive Kybella Double Chin Treatment begin to see visible results after just a few weeks, as the swelling subsides, and the body starts to eliminate the destroyed fat cells. Complete results will continue to improve over the next several months. As additional Kybella treatments are administered, the more dramatically patient results continue to improve.
